“I told my wife you look like Tom Cruise,” I blurted to a passing runner. He seemed nonplused. I had felt an urge to make some human contact since I’d seen him so often on the jogging path but had never spoken. Next time we met, he reigned in his dog and remarked, “My wife laughed when I told her what you said.” Now I was nonplused. A few weeks later I realized I had confused facts and faces: I had said “Tom Cruise,” while the gentleman looked remarkably like a paunchy, unkempt version of Tom Hanks.
